Consumer Product Testing Lab

We are a CPSC accredited lab testing various consumer products for the presence of lead, heavy metals, phthalates, formaldehyde, and other restricted organic compounds.  As stated by the CPSIA, these compounds and heavy metals are regulated in children’s products.  In addition to this, we also conduct Mechanical Hazards/Use & Abuse tests on children’s items to determine if small parts, sharp points, or sharp edges, which would be a danger to children, present themselves.  Mechanical Hazards/Use & Abuse testing may be necessary to ensure children’s products are safe for their age group and that the toy doesn’t present itself as a hazard.  A children’s product is defined as an item designed or intended primarily for children 12 years of age or younger.  Examples of items that may qualify as children’s products are: toys, clothes, furniture, jewelry, games, CD’s/DVD’s, strollers, bicycles, and footwear.  All these items need to be tested to verify compliance with the current CPSC requirements.

The CPSIA states that companies cannot manufacture, import, distribute, nor sell children’s toys and childcare article that contain more than 300 parts per million (ppm) of lead in coatings and substrates, with an ultimate target of 100 ppm on August 14, 2011.  The CPSIA also limits the amount of phthalates allowed, less than 0.1% (1,000 ppm) of one of the six banned phthalates (DEHP, DBP, BBP, DINP, DIP, DnOP).  Additionally, the requirements have become more restrictive as to the amounts of hazardous heavy soluble metals (ASTM F963) that can be present in a children’s consumer product.

As the CPSC moves on into their enforcement phase, our lab can assist you with conducting the necessary testing to safely market your items to children.  Our staff is highly knowledgeable with compliance requirements and can provide you with quick response and turn-around time.
