ATS Celebrated 50 Years in Business

We hope 2018 is off to a great start! ATS celebrated 50 years in business this past May, and we wanted to take this opportunity to thank our customers for their loyalty and support. What started as a small company with operations out of one of the founding member’s basement, Jim F. Hills’, has become a large operation with 28 locations, 750 employees, and over 100 million in revenues. Since our founding in 1967, ATS has established a reputation with business, industry, and the legal profession for services in Metallurgy and Materials Testing, Chemical Analysis, Non-destructive Testing, Forensic and Consulting Engineering, Fire and Explosion Investigations, and Calibration Services. ATS has branded itself as a one-stop shop, multidisciplinary laboratory, performing a wide array of testing, consulting, inspection, and calibration services. The various services offered are just as vast as the industries ATS partners with. From automotive to aerospace, industrial facilities to consumer product testing, the types of clients ATS works with and the standards tested to is vastly broad and continually expands. We look forward to the future growth of ATS and ensuring we meet the needs of all our customers.

prop 65 acrylamide testing
ATS Performs Acrylamide Testing

ATS routinely performs testing to support compliance with the California Proposition 65 requirements, which requires manufactures/importers to properly warn consumers of chemicals contained in products that may be cancer causing or a reproductive toxin. As of late, there has been a growing concern in acrylamide content in some products. Acrylamide was added to the Prop 65 list in 1990 but the growing concern is around the levels in coffee and other processed items such as paper, dyes, and plastics. It is also found in some foods, such as potatoes. The Maximum Allowable Dose Level is 140 micrograms/day and the No Significant Risk Level (NSRL) is 0.2 micrograms/day. Acrylamide analysis is performed at ATS using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GCMS). oehha.ca.gov/proposition-65/chemicals/acrylamide

new phthalates added
CPSIA Update: NEW Phthalates Added

Effective as of April 25, 2018 the CPSC phthalate method will be revised to include additional phthalates and one will be removed from the list of currently regulated phthalates. The final rule will prohibit the use of diisononyl phthalate (DINP), diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP), di-n-pentyl phthalate (DPENP), di-n-hexyl phthalate (DHEXP), and dicyclohexyl phthalate (DCHP) in children’s toys and child care articles. The prohibition is already in effect for di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), dibutyl phthalate (DBP), and benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP). The updated standard operating procedure for determination of phthalates (CPSC-CH-C1001-09.4) is currently listed as a draft and open for comment until January 10, 2018.

The new phthalate rule removes diisodecyl phthalate (DIDP) from the requirement, however, DIDP remains on the California Proposition 65 list. Therefore, if you are looking to test products/components for both the CPSC/CPSIA and CA Prop 65 phthalate requirements, there will be a total of 9 phthalates to analyze for.

furfuryl alcohol testing
ATS Expands Proposition 65 Capability – Furfuryl Alcohol Testing

The team of ATS experts continue to routinely assist clients with California Proposition 65 testing. The list of chemicals we analyze for has recently expanded and sets ATS apart from the competition. It is a broad and expansive list. A recent addition to our Prop 65 testing list is furfuryl alcohol. There are very limited labs that are setup to analyze for furfuryl alcohol. ATS has performed furfuryl alcohol analysis on a variety of items including food samples. Part of our analysis includes working with toxicology firms. If a chemical comes back high, we then partner with the toxicologist to perform an exposure assessment in order to determine if a warning label will be required to sell in the state of California. ATS seeks to meet the needs of all our clients when it comes to CA Prop 65. Therefore, we are regularly expanding the list of chemicals we can test for to help our clients ensure compliance with California and other state requirements.
