Common Test Methods
  • ASTM D3330 – Standard Test Method for Peel Adhesion of Pressure-Sensitive Tape
  • ASTM D6252 – Standard Test Method for Peel Adhesion of Pressure-Sensitive Label Stocks at a 90° Angle
  • ASTM D903 – Standard Test Method for Peel or Stripping Strength of Adhesive Bonds
  • ASTM D1876 – Standard Test Method for Peel Resistance of Adhesives (T-Peel Test)

Adhesives are valuable in a wide variety of applications. For example, labels, masking tapes, bandages, etc. All exhibit varying degrees of peel adhesion strength. Peel adhesion strength is calculated as the amount of force required to peel an adhesive with a specific width from the substrate it adheres to. The bond strength depends on whether the intended use is temporary or permanent.

Temporary functionality requires a balance between retaining enough adhesion to adequately stick to the substrate and permitting easy removal. Permanent functionality typically requires maximizing bond strength. Optimal adhesion levels are acquired only when the substrate is clean and free of any contaminants. Measuring peel adhesion strength is necessary in determining which adhesion is best suited for its desired end use application.
