NDT – LIXI & OpenVision™
Corrosion under insulation (CUI) is a major industry problem. In May 2014, American Petroleum Institute (API) released a new Recommended Practice 583 to address the issue and to understand the complexity of CUI. ATS has two new inspection tools to combat this issue, a radiometric profiler from LIXI and an OpenVision™ Model OVCF-NDT-70.

The radiometric profiler is a handheld radiographic system using a low-level radioactive source. The source is mounted to a C-arm and measures density changes which can allow for an estimation of the pipe wall thickness. The low-level source does not require any radiation barricades and does not set off radiation meters attached to tanks.

In addition to the radiometric profiler, ATS has also acquired an OpenVision™ Model OVCF-NDT-70. This is a real-time radiography unit that generates x-rays to identify CUI. With OpenVision™, an operator can quickly pinpoint areas of concern to either supplement with profile radiography or strip small amounts of insulation for further evaluation.

Over the past few months we have utilized these technique with several clients. One client in particular includes Sabic Innovative Plastics in Burkville, Alabama. Due to our detection of a leak that was found using new and alternative methods, Sabic received recognition from their parent company in Saudi Arabia.
