Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) was recently acquired to meet the growing needs of ATS customers to machine any metallic materials in a more precise manner.
Electrical discharge machining (EDM), sometimes informally or unofficially also referred to as spark machining, spark eroding, burning, wire burning or wire erosion, is a machining process used to cut materials by using electrical discharge cutting.
Material is removed from the work piece by a series of rapidly recurring current discharges between two electrodes, separated by a liquid. Many of our clients require testing to be performed with high precision parts, the Wire EDM allows ATS to provide our clients with those cutting tolerances. Also, the EDM can cut intricate contours or shapes in hardened steel without the need for heat treatment. In fact, the hardness of the material is a complete non-issue for the EDM. This machine is capable of cutting material over 4” thick and weighing more than 3500 pounds. Wire EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) machines are one of the best machines to use for accuracy and precision cutting of material for testing.
