What is a Creep Test?
A creep test measures the degree and rate a material deforms over time. Often performed at high temperatures, creep tests effectively simulate the mechanical and thermal stresses endured by materials under load. They offer insight into a material’s behavior once exposed to specific conditions, giving engineers an opportunity to determine if a material is an effective choice for its intended application.
During creep tests, the test specimens endure continuous stress via tension and compression. The testing process consists of three stages.
Stage One
The creep rate quickly rises before slowing down and decreasing.
Stage Two
The creep rate remains nearly constant as the strain hardening and recovery processes compete with one another.
Stage Three
The third and final stage is the tertiary stage, occurring when the specimen is nearing failure.
Technicians record the time for rupture if a specimen fractures at the end of a creep test. If the specimen does not fracture, then the technician may measure its creep recovery.
