ASTM D522 Testing

Applied Technical Services conducts ASTM D522 testing to evaluate a coating’s resistance to cracking or elongation. Coatings become elongated when substrates experience harsh conditions during their manufacturing or service life. The American Society for Testing and Materials developed ASTM D522 to provide details on test methods involving the flexibility of coatings and substrates.

The ASTM D522 Testing Procedure
To begin the procedure, technicians apply the coating to rubber-like materials, sheet metal, or steel strip materials at a consistent thickness. Once dried or cured, technicians bend the panels over a mandrel to evaluate the coating’s resistance to cracking. There are two methods of procedure for this standard, during Method A, technicians bend the panels over a conical mandrel, and for Method B, technicians bend the panels over cylindrical mandrels. After completing the procedure, technicians carefully examine the coating and note any damage noticeable to the naked eye.
The Importance of Coating Testing

Manufacturers rely on coating testing and analysis services to evaluate coatings’ quality, longevity, and functionality. Our technicians conduct coating testing services in compliance with common ASTM standards to ensure our services are thorough and accurate. We also personalize our services to meet the personalized needs of our clients and subject coatings to conditions that simulate the conditions associated with the sample’s intended application.
