PH Analysis

Applied Technical Services provides pH analysis to determine the alkalinity or acidity of a solution. Our pH analysis services help manufacturers ensure that solutions are at their desired pH values. Failure to properly evaluate pH values may affect a product’s quality, production process, and safety.

What is pH?

The pH, or the potential of hydrogen, refers to the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution. pH values range from 0 – 14 on a logarithmic scale and determine if a sample is basic, neutral, or acidic. pH values below 07 are acidic, pH values of 07 are neutral, and values between 07 and 14 are basic solutions.

Measuring pH

The Glass-Electrode Method

Experts compare a glass electrode’s voltage to a reference electrode’s voltage. The voltage generated between the two electrodes is directly proportional to the sample’s pH value. Advantages include:

Color-Changing Indicators

Ph indicators change colors to indicate a solution’s pH value. Different indicators have varying detection ranges, so it’s important to select an indicator capable of fulfilling the needs of a project. For example, phenolphthalein ranges from 8.2 to 10.0, whereas litmus ranges from 4.5 to 8.3. Universal indicators mix multiple pH indicators to produce results for a broader range of pH values.

pH Analysis Applications

The pH of a solution can affect the behavior, biological functions, microbial activity, and nutrients in a solution. Various industries require pH anlaysis, including agriculture, food and beverage, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and water treatment.
