CMM Reverse Engineering
The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies provides CMM reverse engineering services to clients needing dimensional inspections. We’ve equipped our dimensional inspection lab with several professional-grade precision 3D scanning instruments capable of conducting high-resolution scans of physical objects.
What is CMM Reverse Engineering, and When is it Needed?
A coordinate measuring machine, or CMM, is an instrument used to measure the geometric dimensions of physical objects of various shapes and sizes. CMMs consist of a measuring probe, computing system, software, and machine. Each component helps the machine’s operators measure the subject’s dimensions with precision and detail. CMM reverse engineering occurs when engineers use a physical part to create a 3D virtual model. The 3D models allow engineers to reverse engineer the material’s construction which can help improve their understanding of the material’s purpose and uses.
Learn More About Our Dimensional Inspection Lab
Our state-of-the-art dimensional inspection lab houses three industrial-grade coordinate measuring machines capable of analyzing samples ranging from 1 inch in diameter to the size of a large automobile engine. Our technicians use a North Star Imaging 5000, Zeiss Metrotom 1500, and a FARO Quantum Max scanner to conduct highly accurate and rapid scans for our clients.
North Star Imaging x5000
The North Star X5000 is a versatile and configurable industrial CT X-ray inspection system capable of scanning small and large components. The X5000 is ideal for various applications, including reverse engineering, 2D and 3D metrology, and 3D CAD comparisons.
Zeiss Metrotom 1500
The Zeiss Metrotom 1500 is a CT-based CMM used to evaluate a material’s geometric characteristics of a material. The 1500 can examine parts of various materials, including plastic, metal, composites, and ceramics.
FARO Quantum Max
The FARO Quantum Max uses non-contact measurement arm technology to scan physical objects of varying sizes. The Quantum Max is ideal for acquiring accurate 3D measurements of small – medium-sized components.
The Zeiss Metrotom 1500 is a computed tomography machine with reliable X-ray technology. The chamber can scan subjects up to 300 mm in diameter by 23.6 high and 50 kg in weight.
