Salt spray SWAAT testing chamber

SWAAT Testing

Applied Technical Services provides a comprehensive Salt Water Acetic Acid Test (SWAAT) for coated and uncoated metals. When purchasing metals or aluminum alloys for marine-based infrastructure, corrosion resistance is critical. Ions in seawater corrode metals faster than in freshwater, weakening the strength of metal products and requiring costly repairs.

ATS knows the importance of sustainable and cost-effective materials, which is why our salt spray lab offers ASTM G85 tests that simulate the severity of marine environments on metals. SWAAT is one of five rigorous ASTM G85 modifications to the ASTM B117 industry standard for salt spray testing.

What is SWAAT?
SWAAT evaluates the corrosion resistance of coated and uncoated metals and aluminum alloys when exposed to synthetic sea salt and humidity at a high temperature. The synthetic sea salt (2.8 to 3.0 pH) used in SWAAT is more acidic than the B117 standard (6.5 to 7.2 pH) to anticipate real-world conditions.
SWAAT Testing Procedure
The SWAAT procedure consists of a two-part repeating cycle. First, a specialist stores the coated or uncoated metal in a sea salt chamber kept at 41°C (24°C to 35°C for organically coated materials) to accelerate the metal’s reaction to the briny conditions.
For thirty minutes, the metal is continually exposed to the synthetic sea salt spray or fog at a condensation rate of 1.0 to 2.0 mL/80cm2/hour. Next, the testing chamber raises the internal humidity to over 98% RH for 90 minutes until the cycle repeats.
Finally, our experts inspect the metals for visible signs of corrosion. The metals least affected by the testing have the highest corrosion resistance.
