Cyclic Fatigue
Applied Technical Services’ mechanical testing department offers cyclic fatigue testing services that measure how cyclic forces affect a material over time. Fatigue can lead to structural failure in materials, so it’s important to conduct cyclic fatigue tests that evaluate the life expectancy and strength of materials and structures.
What is Cyclic Fatigue?
Cyclic fatigue is the stress, strain, and deformation experienced by a material during cyclic loading. There are two forms of cyclic fatigue: low cycle and high cycle fatigue.
Low Cycle Fatigue Testing
Low cycle fatigue testing exposes components to cyclic strains that induce fatigue failure in a limited number of cycles. Materials experiencing low cycle fatigue will often experience plastic deformation in each cycle and have a finite endurance for the loading cycle.
High Cycle Fatigue Testing
High cycle fatigue occurs when a material experience elastic deformation after a high number of cycles. High cycle fatigue tests have low amplitude and high frequency.
