Radiation Lot Acceptance Testing

The Applied Technical Services (ATS) Family of Companies offers RLAT (radiation lot acceptance testing) at our state-of-the-art radiation lab.
Space Radiation
Space radiation poses an array of threats to electrical equipment and systems. These effects can occur instantly or over time, resulting in malfunction or complete failure of electronic devices. Although some electrical equipment and systems can endure these effects, they will eventually lose all functionality and break due to cumulative, long-term damage.
Total Ionizing Dose Effects
TID (total ionizing dose) effects can cause functional failure and drastic degradation in electrical equipment. These effects accumulate over a service life in environments exposed to high solar radiation levels, with insufficiently radiation-hardened (rad-hard) components giving out significantly faster. Various testing methods can combat the risks posed by radiation before manufacturers send their equipment into space.
Single Engery Effects
SEEs (single energy effects) occur when heavy protons or ions pass through semiconductor components to deposit energy. They can be either destructive or nondestructive but ultimately pose a risk to aerospace missions by causing high-energy electrical disturbances in a typical circuit operation.
What Radiation Lot Acceptance Testing Is
RLAT (radiation lot acceptance testing) is a testing procedure that inspects semiconductor lots for sufficient resistance to various radiation effects. Radiation lot acceptance testing occurs both before and after exposing semiconductor components to radiation effects. During this testing procedure, every parameter has average and standard deviation criteria that define the success or failure of the irradiated parts.
How Radiation Lot Acceptance Testing Works
Radiation experts conduct functional tests, taking parametric measurements throughout the process. Every parameter under testing needs to stay within the set specification limits. Experts compare and calculate the test results to the part limits using standard and average deviation values and a one-sided tolerance factor. They then document their findings before reporting them back to manufacturers.
