The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) performs creep testing services that determine the creep rate and creep rupture life of materials.

What is a Creep Test?

A creep test measures the degree and rate a material deforms over time. Often performed at high temperatures, creep tests effectively simulate the mechanical and thermal stresses endured by materials under load. They offer insight into a material’s behavior once exposed to specific conditions, giving engineers an opportunity to determine if a material is an effective choice for its intended application.

During creep tests, the test specimens endure continuous stress via tension and compression. The testing process consists of three stages.

Stage One

The creep rate quickly rises before slowing down and decreasing.

Stage Two

The creep rate remains nearly constant as the strain hardening and recovery processes compete with one another.

Stage Three

The third and final stage is the tertiary stage, occurring when the specimen is nearing failure.

Technicians record the time for rupture if a specimen fractures at the end of a creep test. If the specimen does not fracture, then the technician may measure its creep recovery.

About Our Creep Testing Services

Our A2LA and Nadcap accreditation mechanical testing lab provides comprehensive creep testing services. Our cutting-edge creep testing machines conduct tests at temperatures as high as 1600°F, and we also perform tests at ambient and extremely low temperatures. Our testing specialists work diligently to deliver accurate, measurable, and fast results that aid with the following:

  • Material selection
  • Product design
  • Predicting the longevity of materials
  • Ensuring a material’s reliability
  • Simulating real-world performance

We perform tests in compliance with the ASTM E139 and E292 standards and offer custom testing for our clients’ convenience.

Why are Creep Tests Important?

Creep tests offer critical insight into a material’s ability to withstand high stress and high temperatures during its operation. The information and data gathered during creep tests enable engineers to ensure that the manufacturing process is reliable enough to meet the safety and performance standards necessary to excel at specific tasks. Failure to conduct creep tests on products and materials could result in the following:

  • Excessive deformation
  • Comprised functionality
  • Premature product failure
  • Noncompliance
  • Safety hazards
  • Property damage
