ISO 12219-3 VOC Testing
Applied Technical Services conducts ISO 12219-3 VOC testing to identify the presence and content of VOCs. VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) are chemicals that will emit as a gas at room temperature or higher. They are present in many common materials, including the fabrics, adhesives, leathers, and types of vinyl used on the interior of cars. These compounds can be organic or manmade and will give off an odor. VOCs negatively impact air quality and can pose a risk to human health. Therefore, governing bodies such as the EPA have regulated the emission of volatile organic compounds. Several methods and standards are available for VOC testing. The ISO 12219-3 Standard
ISO 12219-3 VOC testing is one of several methods that screen car trim materials for volatile and semi-volatile vapor-phase organic compounds (VOCs and SVOCs, respectively). ISO 12219-3 analysis targets VOCs in a volatility range from n-hexane to n-hexadecane, as well as volatile carbonyl compounds like formaldehyde. This rapid, cost-effective test is valuable for:
- Evaluating VOC emissions for routine quality control
- Comparing emissions between a product’s range of colors, patterns, etc.
- Assessing uniformity or conformity in products between certification tests
- Evaluating prototype products and materials during development
