VDA 277

Applied Technical Services offers VDA 277 standard testing to determine the total level of VOC emissions from non-metallic automotive interior materials. VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) are chemical compounds that tend to evaporate easily. They include both natural and human-made solids and liquids which can emit gasses into the atmosphere. Materials in new vehicle interiors such as plastic and vinyl emit VOCs, some of which can be harmful to human health and/or the environment when present at high levels.

ATS’ VDA 277 testing is an accurate and useful way of ensuring that automotive interior materials are safe for consumer use and EPA-compliant. This internationally recognized method is carried out by heating a specific quantity of sample test material in a vial using the Headspace incubator where the emitted VOCs can be analyzed. Along with VDA 277, VDA 278 is also used sometimes to determine the individual VOCs in materials. Through the process of gas chromatography, the level of emitted substances can be evaluated to determine whether the sample passes manufacturer and/or government regulations.
