Electrostatic Discharge Testing

ESD testing, or electrostatic discharge testing, is conducted to ensure compliance with industry standards set by the Federal Aviation Administration and Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics. When two differently charged subjects come into contact, an exchange of electrons causes electrostatic discharge. ESD can transfer thousands of volts of electricity from one subject to another, potentially damaging sensitive electronic components. The Applied Technical Services ESD testing lab conducts electrostatic discharge testing in accordance with RTCA-DO-160 standards, as well as other EMI/EMC testing in compliance with MIL-STD-461 CS118 and the following RTCA-DO-160 sections:

  • Section 15: Magnetic Effect
  • Section 16: Power Input*
  • Section 17: Voltage Spike
  • Section 18: Audio Frequency Conducted Susceptibility
  • Section 19: Induced Signal Susceptibility
  • Section 20: Radio Frequency Susceptibility Conducted
  • Section 20: Radio Frequency Susceptibility Radiated
  • Section 21: Emission of Radio Frequency Energy Conducted
  • Section 21: Emission of Radio Frequency Energy Radiated
  • Section 22: Lightning Induced Transient Susceptibility**
  • Section 25: Electrostatic Discharge
