Applied Technical Services provides hydrostatic testing to ensure the structural integrity of pressure vessels and systems.
What is Hydrostatic Testing?
Hydrostatic testing, also known as hydro testing, is a nondestructive testing method that calls for maximizing the water pressure inside a component to analyze its strength and identify areas that may be vulnerable to leaks or ruptures. Technicians first fill the subject with water, which forces air out of the vessel and allows pressurized pumping to see if the water leaks through cracks in the vessel walls. A visual inspection to detect any leaks is performed by the Technician. There are many different hydro testing techniques, with the most effective method typically depending on the component’s size.
Hydrostatic testing requires that the equipment involved is out of service, as technicians cannot perform this method during operation. Technicians most commonly use hydro testing to verify that a recently repaired pressure vessel is structurally sound and can thus return to service. This testing method is highly accurate and essential to maintaining industry compliance. Hydro testing can help companies avoid vessel ruptures that result in unexpected downtime and costly component replacement.
Applications
Applied Technical Services conducts hydro testing on several types of vessels, including but not limited to:
- Pipelines and Piping Systems
- Fuel Tanks
- Gas Cylinders
- Plumbing Systems
- Boilers
How Often is Hydrostatic Testing Necessary?
Hydro testing is usually required every three to five years, depending on the type of system at issue. Organizations, such as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), determine the appropriate frequency of these inspections. The experts at ATS help clients maintain compliance with industry standards and reduce safety risks to personnel and equipment.
