Applied Technical Services performs electrostatic discharge testing to ensure industry standard compliance and safety and to prevent costly damage to electronic components and devices.

ESD Testing

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) occurs when two objects containing different electric charges make contact. This contact causes an exchange of electrons, creating an electromagnetic field buildup which leads to electrostatic discharge. ESD can transfer thousands of volts of static electricity, damaging sensitive electronic circuits and causing component failure or malfunction. Electrostatic discharge precautions must be taken whenever an electrical device could potentially come into contact with a person or other device.

EMI & EMC Testing

Electrostatic discharge testing is required to verify compliance with electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards, such as RTCA-DO-160. This standard, set by the Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics, establishes guidelines for various aspects of electromagnetic compatibility and interference testing. ATS is equipped to perform testing in accordance with MIL-STD-461 CS118, as well as the following RTCA-DO-160 sections:

  • S 15: Magnetic Effect
  • S 16: Power Input (28 VDC and 115 VAC 400Hz)
  • S 17: Voltage Spike
  • S 18: Audio Frequency Conducted Susceptibility
  • S 19: Induced Signal Susceptibility
  • S 20: Radio Frequency Susceptibility Conducted
  • S 20: Radio Frequency Susceptibility Radiated (Coming 2022)
  • S 21: Emission of Radio Frequency Energy Conducted
  • S 21: Emission of Radio Frequency Energy Radiated
  • S 22: Lightning Induced Transient Susceptibility (Up to Level 3)
  • S 25: Electrostatic Discharge
