Electromagnetic interference (EMI) testing is a method of measuring the level, type of noise, and signals emitted by a device, piece of equipment, or vehicle. Clients request EMI testing to ensure that the vehicle’s electromagnetic emissions are within the required range to avoid interference with other components, equipment, and vehicles. Cellular networks, ignition systems, and natural weather events such as lightning can all cause electromagnetic interference.

EMI testing is one of the many comprehensive testing methods that Applied Technical Services offers. EMI testing plays an important role in maintaining optimal technological performance for equipment used in several industries, including avionics and military. We offer a multitude of electromagnetic interference tests that comply with MIL-STD-461 and RTCA-DO-160 standards.

MIL-STD-461

This standard establishes electromagnetic interference testing procedures and limits for military subsystems and equipment. MIL-STD-461 determines the interface and verification requirements for electromagnetic interference emissions and the vulnerability characteristics of electromechanical equipment used by the US Department of Defense.

The MIL-STD-461 EMI testing procedures we offer include:

  • RE101
  • RE102 (up to 18GHz)
  • CE101
  • CE102
  • CS101
  • CS114
  • CS115
  • CS116
  • CS117
  • CS118
  • RS101
  • RS103 (up to 18GHz and 200V/m)

MIL-STD-704

This standard establishes the requirements and characteristics of aircraft electric power provided at the input terminals of electric utilization equipment.

The MIL-STD-704 EMI testing procedures we offer include:

  • LDC (28VDC)
  • SAC (115V AC 400Hz single phase)
  • TAC (115V AC 400Hz three phase)

RTCA-DO-160

This standard provides the criteria for the environmental testing of aircrafts. This criteria applies to all sizes of aircraft in various fields, including but not limited to general aviation aircraft, helicopters, commercial wide-body airliners, and supersonic transport aircraft.

The RTCA-DO-160 EMI testing procedures we offer include:

  • Section 15, Magnetic Effect
  • Section 16, Power Input (28VDC and 115VAC 400Hz)
  • Section 17, Voltage Spike
  • Section 18, Audio Frequency Conducted Susceptibility
  • Section 19, Induced Signal Susceptibility
  • Section 20, Radio Frequency Susceptibility (Conducted)
  • Section 20, Radio Frequency Susceptibility
  • Section 21, Emission of Radio Frequency Energy (Radiated and Conducted)
  • Section 22, Lightning Induced Transient Susceptibility (up to Level 3)
  • Section 25, Electrostatic Discharge
