Applied Technical Services provides rope access certification training for technicians seeking SPRAT accreditation or reaccreditation. SPRAT stands for the Society of Professional Rope Access Technicians, an administrative body that establishes industry-recognized rope access standards in North America. Most employers hiring rope access technicians will look for workers certified by either SPRAT, or the European counterpart IRATA.

Rope access is an in-demand work-at-heights skill, which enables personnel to navigate a system of ropes to scale, descend, or move laterally across buildings, construction sites, and tall structures. Because rope access allows technicians to reach high, tight, or unstable work areas, it is an efficient and safe alternative to scaffolding installation. As a professional discipline, rope access is often utilized in facade inspections, pressure washing, painting, and building installations, among other uses.

Certification With ATS

ATS’ rope access certification training provides students with the necessary hands-on preparation to become familiar with SPRAT regulations and procedures. For the first four days of our 5-day course, students will be taught about the various aspects of the rope access technique, before applying what they learn into practice at our onsite training area. These classes are taught by our Level III SPRAT-certified training coordinator, who helps students learn necessary skills like maintaining equipment, tying knots, and following rescue protocol. A certification session is held on the fifth day and consists of multiple exam sections administered by an independent evaluator.

SPRAT recognizes three levels of rope access certification:

  • Level I: Qualifies entry-level technicians to perform basic rope access functions while under the direct supervision of a higher-level technician.
  • Level II: Technicians on this level are qualified to conduct rope access operations and/or safety evaluations of rope access operations under the supervision of a Level III technician; also capable of conducting basic rescue from rope access systems.
  • Level III: Technicians on this level are qualified to assume responsibility for the entirety of a rope access work site, can design and analyze rope access systems; capable of both directing and conducting rescue operations from rope access systems.
