The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) calibrates natural gas custody transfer metering systems.
What is a Natural Gas Custody Transfer Metering System?
A natural gas custody transfer metering system is a specially engineered, standards‑driven measurement station used during the transfer of ownership of natural gas between two commercial parties. Its purpose is to measure the quantity and quality of gas being sold, ensuring the process is compliant, billed accurately, and fair for both parties. Gas custody meter systems are comprised of the following key components:
- Flow meters: Measure the volume of gas traveling through a pipeline
- Pressure and temperature sensors: Measure the gas’s pressure and temperature which help determine its energy content and volume
- Gas chromatographs: Analyze the gas’s composition, determining quality and energy content
- Flow computers: Use flow rate, gas composition, temperature and pressure to determine the volume of gas being transferred
Gas custody transfers often operate in harsh environments and must be able to withstand long term exposure to corrosive elements, high pressure, and extreme temperatures. Routine calibration is recommended to ensure their accuracy of gas custody transfer meters.
About Our Natural Gas Custody Transfer Metering System
The ATS FoC has one of North America’s largest commercial calibration labs, capable of calibrating a wide range of flow meters using various fluids including water, air, speciality gas, and natural gas. Our high flow natural gas facility has the following capabilities:
- Flow Rate Range: 42 to 1,330,000 Actual Cubic Feet Per Hour (ACFH)
- Calibration Pressure Range: 900 to 1100 Pounds per Square Inch Gauge ( PSIG)
- Uncertainty: 0.16% to 0.24% in volumetric flow rate
- Standard Range of Line Sizes 3″ to 36″
Why is It Important to Calibrate Gas Custody Transfer Meters?
Calibrating natural gas custody transfer meters is essential because even minor measurement errors can result in major financial discrepancies in high‑volume transactions. NIST-traceable transfer meter calibrations protect buyers and sellers, ensuring the natural gas transfer process is legally defensible and fair for both parties. It also helps transfer meter owners and operators maintain compliance with AGA and ISO standards.
