Hydrostatic Pressure Testing

Hydrostatic Pressure Testing

Applied Technical Services offers hydrostatic pressure testing to ensure the structural integrity of pressure systems and identify any flaws.
Hydrostatic pressure testing allows owners and supervisors over pressurized systems, such as pipelines and vessels, to easily locate leaks or ruptures. Technicians first fill the system to its maximum capacity with liquid (usually water), allowing them to perform a visual inspection identifying discontinuities. This nondestructive testing method is often used to verify that a component qualifies to return to service after being repaired. Our technicians select one among multiple hydrostatic pressure testing techniques according to the pressure system’s size and purpose. All versions of this method require that supervisors remove the involved equipment from service, however, as technicians cannot conduct hydrostatic pressure testing while a system is in use. Equipment commonly tested using hydrostatic pressure testing includes plumbing systems, boilers, pipelines, piping systems, fuel tanks, and gas cylinders.
Hydrostatic testing is essential to maintaining industry compliance and can help companies avoid the costly repairs and downtime caused by a leak or rupture. Several organizations, such as the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM), the American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME), and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), determine hydro testing standards. These regulatory bodies typically require testing every three to five years. The certified hydrostatic testing experts at ATS have the knowledge and skills to help our clients maintain compliance and reduce safety risks to personnel and equipment.
