The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) performs the Brinell hardness test on materials in conjunction with the ISO 6506 testing standard. The result of a Brinell hardness has a direct correlation to a materialโ€™s resistance durability and the test is a popular choice when experts need to evaluate materials with large grain structures, such as aluminum, cast iron, and steel. Our metallurgy analysis experts conduct comprehensive tests to ensure the quality, durability, and compliance of metals and alloys.

What is ISO 6506?

During the ISO 6506 procedure, technicians use a machine to press hard metal spherical indenter into the sample. The applied test load is between 1 kgf and 3000 kgf and following the indenterโ€™s impact with the specimen, technicians measure indentationโ€™s diameter. To complete the procedure experts calculate the materialโ€™s hardness using the diameter of the steel ball, indentation, and the applied load.

Our Hardness Testing Services

We offer numerous types of hardness testing services, including, but not limited to the following:

Nondestructive Hardness Testing

  • Leeb hardness testing
  • Ultrasonic hardness testing

Destructive Hardness Testing

  • Rockwell hardness testing
  • Knoop hardness testing
  • Vickers hardness testing

The Benefits of the Brinell Hardness Testing

The Brinell hardness test is an effective test method for experts determining the hardness of metal materials, but itโ€™s also effective for some nonmetallic materials. Unlike some alternative hardness testing methods, the Brinell hardness test uses a larger indenter capable of adequately assessing the hardness of thicker samples. The large indenter also averages out most of the inconsistencies in a sampleโ€™s surface and substrate. The test method limits the need for prep work, which greatly accelerates the testing process.
