Applied Technical Services is a fully certified and accredited consumer product testing provider with a CPSIA testing lab, performing a variety of product and toy testing services in compliance with the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act.
Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act
The CPSIA, or Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, establishes guidelines for consumer product safety standards and regulations. The CPSIA set rules for several different aspects of consumer products, including lead content, phthalate content, third-party product testing, toy safety, imports, and motorized all-terrain vehicles (ATVs). Consumer product testing must be completed by an accredited third-party laboratory. For more information, see the Consumer Product Safety Commissionโs Rules Requiring Third-Party Testing.
Phthalates
Phthalates are plasticizers produced with oil that are used to give products a softer texture. There are many phthalate compounds that are banned from child care articles and childrenโs toys and cannot be present in a concentration higher than 0.1%. These compounds include: DBP, BBP, DEHP, DINP, DIBP, DHEXP, DPENP, and DCHP. Phthalates can commonly be found in several different types of products, such as:
- Personal Care Products
- Vinyl Flooring
- Garden Hoses
- Medical Tubing
- Lubricating Oils
- Plastic Packaging
Lead
Due to its toxic nature, lead content is heavily regulated for consumer products. There are some products that are exempt from lead level compliance testing, including but not limited to:
- Yarn
- Wood
- Natural Materials
- Chemistry Sets
- Childrenโs Books Printed After 1985
- Certain Educational Materials
