Applied Technical Services’ Family of Companies conducts testing on the full range of space radiation effects in electronic devices.

Space Radiation Effects Testing at ATS’ Family of Companies

Applied Technical Services’ Family of Companies features a variety of space radiation effects testing methods for manufacturers that need to verify the reliability of their products before sending them into their standard operating environments. Manufacturers can work closely with our space radiation effects engineers to ensure product functionality and locate electrical, optical, and thermal solutions.

We offer engineering support by designing all software, hardware, and fixtures for space radiation testing, performing in-house and remote testing and providing turnkey test solutions. We supply our clients with sample preparation, thinning to 35 microns with verification, chemical etch, and mechanical grind.

Ionizing Radiation Versus Non-Ionizing Radiation

Radiation is either ionizing, containing high energy particles, or non-ionizing, containing low energy particles. Ionizing radiation particles have enough energy to take an electron out of orbit, creating an atom with a more positive charge. Non-ionizing radiation particles have less energy, lacking the power necessary to take an electron out of orbit.

Alpha particles, beta particles, x-rays, gamma rays, and galactic cosmic radiation are forms of ionizing radiation in space. Infrared, microwaves, ultraviolet light, visible light, and radio frequencies are forms of non-ionizing radiation in space. These forms of radiation have the potential to cause damage, requiring specific precautions to be taken in order to prevent these risks.

Effects on Electronics

Electronic devices are susceptible to damage due to space radiation, leading to malfunction or failure in various types of aerospace equipment. Even the most efficient space systems can suffer from total ionizing dose (TID) or displacement damage dose (DDD) over time. Single event effect (SEE) is also an issue, increasing the likelihood of risks during aerospace operations.

Quality Assurance

The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) has rigorous testing methods, guidelines, and standards for space radiation effects testing on electronic devices for aerospace applications. We comply with all testing standards to guarantee that our facility and laboratory meet all requirements set by regulatory bodies, ensuring precision and dependability in our reporting.
