Applied Technical Services offers SPRAT rope access certification courses for both first-time students and experts looking for recertification. Our training program is approved by the Society of Professional Rope Access Technicians (SPRAT) to instruct these courses, administer testing, and determine candidates’ suitability for certification. SPRAT is the North American standardizing body for this industry, setting best practices and safety procedures based on the experience of their voting board of accomplished rope access companies and technicians. As such, their recognition carries weight with companies looking to hire a rope access technician to safely and efficiently perform work-at-heights. Many potential clients will not work with technicians who have not been certified through SPRAT due to the rigor of their operating standards and certification criteria.
While clients primarily pursue ATS’ rope access services for inspection and nondestructive evaluation (NDE) of large assets ranging from storage tanks to pedestrian bridges, this method of working at heights can be applied in a variety of other ways. Candidates who pass one of our courses and attain certification may see work as a rope access technician in any of the following capacities:
- Maintenance and Operations
- Structural, Civil, or Geo-Technical Engineering
- High-Rise Window Cleaning
- Construction, Fabrication, and Painting
- Tower and Antennae Installation
- Theater and Film Set Construction
Course Structure
Our 5-day classes are part instruction and part examination. In the first four sessions, our training coordinator teaches all the criteria relevant to the level of training students have enrolled in. This hands-on instruction imparts practical knowledge on the body of expertise they will need to perform rope access work, including the movement techniques, access equipment, industry best practices, safety procedures, and rescue skills in which a rope access technician is expected to be proficient. During the final session, candidates will take an exam made up of written, verbal, and practical sections. Those whose performance meets requirements will be awarded SPRAT certification for competently applying the things they were taught during the course.
SPRAT recognizes three different categories of achievement and qualification in their certified technicians. We provide courses tailored to the requirements for each of these levels:
- Level I Technicians: personnel in this level perform day-to-day work-at-heights using an approved rope access system under the direct oversight of a certified Level II or Level III technician; can provide limited rescue aid
- Level II Technicians: personnel that perform rope access operations and assess the safety of those operations according to direction from a certified Level III; maintain rope access equipment; can provide basic rescue aid
- Level III Technicians: personnel responsible for an entire rope access project; can design and implement rope access systems; can perform all duties of lower level technicians; can provide advanced rescue aid
