IEC 62133-2 Lithium-Ion Battery Testing and Certification

The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) offers IEC 62133-2 lithium-ion battery testing and certification. We can certify the safety of batteries according to IEC 62133 for secondary cells and batteries that contain alkaline or other non-acid electrolytes.

About IEC 62133-2
The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a global organization for safe and efficient electrical, electronic, and related technologies. Their safety standards are concerned with general specifications, safety, and transportation.

IEC 62133-2 covers portable and sealed secondary cells and batteries that contain alkaline and other non-acid electrolytes, such as lithium-ion and advanced chemical combinations. This standard refers to rechargeable cells and batteries for a variety of applications, from electronics to consumer products, vehicles, and medical devices.

IEC 62133 certification ensures end-users are protected from fire, leak, or explosion associated with thermal runaway in deficient lithium-ion battery products.
Our Capabilities
The IEC 62133 safety standard helps manufacturers anticipate batteries’ responses to regular operating conditions and uncover potential hazards produced by abuse. Our experts can help clients navigate the safety certification process and reach the market faster by determining the relevant laboratory tests and eliminating unnecessary procedures to save time and money.

Mechanical Abuse

The mechanical tests outlined in IEC 62133-2 simulate conditions during battery operation and transport. The tests also subject the battery to drops and impacts produced during reasonable misuse:

Electric Abuse

Electric abuse testing helps our experts assess if a battery can withstand the high voltages and currents demanded by normal operation and reasonable abuse:

Thermal Abuse

Thermal abuse tests subject the battery or cell to extreme and fluctuating temperatures to uncover the product’s limits and potential hazards:
Our Certifications

Our independent battery testing lab is A2LA-accredited to perform electrical and mechanical testing on batteries at the cell, module, and pack levels. We work with batteries of various advanced chemistries, including lithium-ion and lead-acid. Using state-of-the-art equipment, we can subject batteries to a variety of controlled temperatures (-68 ˚C to 120 ˚C) and the following:

Safety testing and certification can help a product in several ways:
