The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) uses an internal rotary inspection system to conduct nondestructive tests on tubes and pipes. Tubes and pipes are critical to the operational efficiency and safety of industrial equipment and facilities, and they must be inspected regularly to maximize their life expectancy. Our team of NDT experts utilize the internal rotary inspection system to evaluate key pieces of industrial machinery and equipment.
What is the Internal Rotary Inspection System?
The Internal Rotary Inspection System (IRIS) is a nondestructive testing (NDT) method where technicians utilize ultrasonic technology to scan the inner and outer diameter of tubes and pipes, allowing them to investigate signs of corrosion. The IRIS inspection process consists of the following processes:
- Technicians insert an IRIS probe into a tube before filling the tube with water.
- The probe’s transducer generates ultrasonic signals within the tube.
- A rotating mirror driven by a small turbine directs the ultrasonic pulse into tube’s wall
- Technicians calculate the wall’s thickness by measuring the difference in time it takes the ultrasonic pulses to travel from the inner-diameter (ID) and outer-diameter (OD).
About Our IRIS Inspection Services
Our certified Our state-of-the-art NDT lab offers IRIS inspection services designed to assess the condition of key pieces of industrial equipment, including:
- Air coolers
- Boilers
- Feed water condensers and heaters
- Fin-fan heat exchanger tubes
- Heat exchangers
- Loading lines
- Product flow lines
- Process piping
Our certified technicians utilize IRIS to examine volumetric wall loss, giving our clients critical insight into their equipment’s health and condition.
How Does IRIS Compare to Other NDT Tube Testing Methods?
IRIS offers several benefits over traditional NDT tube tests, including the ability to do the following:
- Accurately measure wall thickness to +/- 0.127 mm
- Detect the presence and size of internal and external defects
- Effective on both ferrous and nonferrous materials
- Save collected data
- Serve as an effective for eddy current, magnetic flux leakage, and remote field inspections
