Applied Technical Services offers X-ray weld inspections for various industries, including automotive, aerospace, infrastructure, construction, and more. Our technicians inspect the quality and integrity of welds to evaluate whether they meet applicable standards and codes.

NDT and X-Ray

We use X-ray testing to create meticulous and detailed images of an objectโ€™s internal structure. X-rayโ€™s ability to not destroy or alter the object makes it an ideal weld inspection method. Additionally, X-ray is a very flexible method that is suitable for most materials. Performing X-ray weld inspection requires access to opposite sides of the weld. On one side transmission of radiation passes through the object to the other side, where a detector film records the absorption difference to create an image. This detector film image serves as a record for the inspection.

X-ray weld inspections have inherent safety concerns due to the use of radiation and, as such, should only be performed by qualified ATS professionals. Our team creates a secure perimeter encompassing the inspection area to ensure the safety of all personnel. ATS technicians can accurately interpret the x-ray images and write detailed reports for our clients.

Reasons for Weld Inspection

Welds are an integral part of the construction of components and must adhere to respective standards and codes. Welds can be exposed to intense forces during operation, causing them to show signs of damage or deterioration over time. It is imperative that welds undergo regular inspections to ensure their integrity. Our technicians inspect the weld material, base metal, and heat-affected areas for even the smallest flaws. Common defects in welds include:

  • Excessive Weld Reinforcement
  • Cracks
  • Cluster Porosity
  • Cold Lap
  • Inadequate Weld Reinforcement
  • Internal Concavity
  • Incomplete Penetration
  • Internal/External Undercut
  • Slag Inclusions
  • Incomplete Fusion
  • Porosity
