Reese’s Law was established in 2022 to mandate coin and button cell battery safety requirements at a federal level, instituting requirements ranging from certification to performance. Reese’s Law incorporates ANSI/UL 4200A-2023 to require secure battery compartments as well as packaging warnings and is effective from October 23, 2023. Compliance testing and certification began December 20, 2023 and will remain regulated until March 19, 2024.

Reese’s Law Section 2
This section requires the CPSC to enforce rules for consumer products containing coin or button cell batteries imported or manufactured on or before October 23, 2023. These rules align with safety standard ANSI/UL 4200A-2023 to require the following:
Reese’s Law Section 3
This section establishes the requirements for packaging for coin and button cell batteries sold, manufactured, imported, and distributed in the United States after February 12, 2023. Enforcement for zinc-air coin or button cell batteries begins March 8, 2024.
