The ATS Family of Companies (FoC) provides battery safety and certification testing for products used in a wide range of applications and industries. From hand-held appliances to electric vehicles, battery-powered devices are ubiquitous in modern life. Our work supports clients as they develop and prepare battery designs for the market. We can tailor our testing procedures to client and manufacturer needs, following industry standards to ensure products adhere to regulations and best practices.
We test batteries to determine their durability and resistance to rigorous operating conditions, such as vibrations, extreme temperatures, and high electrical loads. The importance of battery safety cannot be understated. Poorly designed batteries and envelopes may crack and leak after sudden impacts. Unvented or regulated batteries may experience high pressure and hazardous gases that cause an explosion or fire.
Certification Planning
The path to official certification may seem complex, which is why ATS works with clients to develop a plan. Our experts help clients understand the requirements to eliminate unnecessary procedures and changes. Our experts can:
- Review product design
- Determine the relevant standards and tests
- Coordinate communication with NRTLs
Safety Testing
Safety tests involve subjecting the battery to the mechanical and electrical conditions of the anticipated operating environment and probable hazards from misuse. Safety testing helps manufacturers identify safety concerns and ensure their product complies with regulatory requirements.Manufacturers request tests that simulate the conditions that may cause battery malfunction or a response to harsh environmental conditions. ATS operates multiple ISO/IEC 17025:2017-accredited labs maintained by experienced professionals. Our experts regularly work with sophisticated equipment to test batteries under a wide range of conditions:
- Amperage: +/- 1040 A
- Power: up to 300 kW
- Temperature: -68 ˚C to 190 ˚C (-90.4 ˚F to 374 ˚F)
- Water Bath: 5 ˚C to 90 ˚C (41 ˚F to 194 ˚F)
- Voltage: up to 750 V
During extreme temperature tests, we work in a hazard-safe room capable of withstanding an explosion, fire, hazardous fumes, and overheating.
