The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) offers deformation tests for acetabular shells in compliance with the ISO 7206-12 testing standard. An acetabular shell, also known as an acetabular cup, is a medical implant designed to replace a diseased or damaged acetabulum. Our medical device tests help manufacturers gain more insight into their implants’ behavior under specific conditions, improving their ability to optimize the implants’ design.

What is ISO 7206-12?

The International Standard for Organization established ISO 7206-12 as a standardized deformation test method for acetabular shells. The standard’s objective is to evaluate the deformation characteristics and durability of acetabular shells used in hip joint prosthesis. During the testing process, technicians subjected a test specimen to opposed two-point loading, which determines the specimen’s short-term deformation. This allows manufacturers to compare the different materials and designs, enabling them to select the best-performing option.

More About Our ISO Compliant Medical Device Testing Lab

Our independent medical device testing laboratory conducts a range of ISO compliant tests to assist manufacturers in developing devices and implants to help millions of people worldwide. Our medical device testing experts use their decades of collective experience to conduct comprehensive tests that accurately simulate the conditions and stress devices must endure to benefit their end users. We offer various types of tests that help our clients evaluate the characteristics and properties of their products, including:

  • Axial compression testing
  • Fatigue testing
  • Lot verification testing
  • Shear testing
  • Simulation and wear testing
  • Tensile testing

In addition to our ISO 7206-12 testing services, we offer other ISO-compliant tests, including:

Why is Deformation Testing Important for Acetabular Shells?

Deformation testing for acetabular shells is important because it determines how an implant will perform under specific conditions. Hip joint replacements must be capable of enduring the significant amount of stress that is placed upon them by everyday activities, such as walking and running. Deformation can render implants ineffective, which can cause pain and suffering for patients. Premature failures can also lead to excessive costs for manufacturers as they may need to rethink their design strategies, respond to lawsuits, and face penalties and fines for ineffective implants.
