Applied Technical Services performs copper purity testing with unmatched expertise in chemical composition testing. Our chemistry labs offer a full spectrum of metal purity testing, with the capacity to evaluate copper, aluminum, steel, titanium, and cobalt. Our chemical testing department is ISO/IEC 17025:2017 (A2LA) accredited, and our quality management system is ISO 9001:2015 registered. We use several testing methods to determine metal purity.

Electrodeposition

Electrodeposition is an electrolytic technique for determining precise copper content when the copperโ€™s purity is between 99.75% and 99.95%. Electrodeposition is effective for testing fire, electrolytic, and chemically refined copper, as well as copper in copper-tellurium alloys. ASTM E53 serves as a general guide for this test. Chemists dissolve the sample into a sulfuric-nitric acid mixture, then apply a current to the mixture. The copper separates and deposits onto a tared platinum cathode. When the solution turns clear, chemists use atomic absorption techniques to verify the amount of copper that did not plate. Our experts combine this amount with the volume of plated copper to determine the sampleโ€™s total copper content. ASTM E121 outlines a similar technique for copper-tellurium alloys.

Alloy Identification

We use our alloy identification process to identify a metalโ€™s chemical makeup. We can identify the precise material blend for many types of alloys, including the copper alloy family. This type of testing benefits numerous industries, such as automotive, manufacturing, nuclear, and aerospace. Our quality control policies also satisfy ASME NQA-1 requirements.
