Applied Technical Services offers MIL-STD-810 Sand Testing in our state-of-the-art environmental testing laboratory.
What is MIL-STD-810 Method 510?
MIL-STD-810 is a Military Standard that devices must comply with to ensure their survivability in the field. MIL-STD-810 Method 510 is a sand and dust test used to evaluate a device’s resistance to sand and dust particles. Method 510 tests two types of material: sand and dust. The military standard defines sand particles as 150-850 micrometers in diameter and dust particles as less than 150 micrometers in diameter.
This test evaluates the device to ensure that sand particles do not penetrate cracks and crevices, obstruct openings, or disrupt bearings and joints. This test aims to identify mechanical problems such as sand particle collection on heatsinks that could impact thermal performance.
How does Method 510 work?
MIL-STD-810 Sand Testing breaks down into two procedures:
- Procedure 1 – Six-hour test of blowing dust between 1.5 to 10 meters per second velocity
- Procedure 2 – 90-minute test of blowing sand at about 18 meters per second velocity
- A final 10-minute operation test to ensure proper functionality of the device
Once testing is complete, ATS experts will evaluate the device to assess several properties such as visual damage, electrical and heating performance, and overall device performance to standards.
