Applied Technical Services provides MIL-STD-810 Dust Testing utilizing our cutting-edge environmental testing laboratory.
What is MIL-STD-810 Method 510?
The MIL-STD-810 Method 510 is a military standard that tests the long-term survivability of devices in sandy and dusty environments such as deserts. The test evaluates potential mechanical issues that may arise due to sand and dust penetrating cracks and crevices, obstructing openings, and disrupting bearings and joints. This method tests two types of materials: sand and dust. The military standard defines a dust particle as less than 150 micrometers in diameter and sand particles as 150-850 micrometers in diameter.
How does Method 510 work?
MIL-STD-810 Sand Testing breaks down into two procedures:
- Procedure 1 โ Six-hour test of blowing dust between 1.5 to 10 meters per second velocity
- Procedure 2 โ 90-minute test of blowing sand at about 18 meters per second velocity
- A final 10-minute operation test to ensure proper functionality of the device
Once both procedures are complete, ATS technicians examine and evaluate the device for any potential issues such as electrical and thermal performance, visual damage such as abrasions and paint chipping, as well as overall device performance to respective standards.
