ISO 3668: Visual Comparison of the Color of Paints

Established by the International Organization for Standardization in 2017, ISO 3668 outlines the procedures and conditions for the visual colorfastness comparison of paints, varnishes, and similar coatings. From consumer product manufacturing to aerospace, accurate color matching and consistency are essential to visual appeal aesthetic quality, customer satisfaction, and brand identity. This testing method provides a systematic approach with detailed guidelines to ensure that colors are evaluated consistently and accurately, reducing discrepancies between batches and ensuring that products meet both manufacturer specifications and customer expectations.

ATS’ colorfastness testing experts follow the precise conditional requirements under which color comparison should take place, including environmental factors such as lighting, background, and observer perception, all of which can significantly affect how color is perceived. ISO 3668 requires that visual color comparisons be conducted under controlled lighting conditions using daylight simulators with correlated color temperatures that depend on the application, as these standardized light sources mimic natural daylight to provide a consistent and neutral illumination that minimizes the impact of color shifts. Our colorfastness testing laboratory features advanced lighting technologies to ensure uniform lighting conditions, eliminating the risk of metamerism.

In addition to lighting, this standard specifies the importance of using standardized backgrounds when comparing colors – typically matte white or grey surfaces that will not influence the perception of the color being evaluated. The samples being compared are placed adjacent to each other in front of the background, allowing for a direct and accurate visual comparison. Additional criteria established by ISO 3668 includes:

  • Sample Preparation
  • Drying and Curing Conditions
  • Observer Perception
  • Observer Evaluation
