Bus Bar Hipot Testing
The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) offers bus bar hipot testing services that confirm the insulation quality of bus bars. Bus bars play an important role in maintaining the safety of electronic equipment and devices.
What is Bus Bar?
A bus bar is an electronic component that serves as a central hub for power distribution across various devices. Bus bars are electrical conductors responsible for collecting power from incoming feeders and then dispersing it to outgoing feeders, allowing them to handle high currents with a minimal risk of failure. While bus bars have been around for decades, modern bus bars are beloved for their many advantages, such as:
- Reduced operating cost
- Improved reliability over alternatives
- Enhanced protection against overloads and faults
- Adaptable configurations
- Recyclability as a sustainable resource
What is Bus Bar Hipot Testing?
Bus bar hipost testing is a nondestructive way to evaluate the functionality of a bus bar’s insulation system. Manufacturers rely on hipot tests to identify weaknesses in their products’ insulation, helping them resolve the underlying issues that could compromise the bus bar’s safety and functionality.
Learn About Our Hipot Testing
Our electrical testing experts conduct hipot tests in our state-of-the-art and A2LA-accredited electrical testing lab. During the testing process, we apply a high voltage that exceeds the bus bar’s operating voltage. Next, we continuously increase the applied voltage as we monitor the response to the increased voltage. Upon completion of the procedure, our experts determined if the bus bar passed the test, and if not, we outline the factors that contributed to the bus bar’s failure.
Why is Bus Bar Hipot Testing Important?
Hipot testing is effective preventative maintenance that detects defects in the insulation systems of bus bars. The information gathered from our bus bar hipot tests can help do the following:
- Prevent equipment failures and potential fire risks
- Develop preventative maintenance strategies that reduce the likelihood of downtime
- Comply with electrical safety standards
