HiPot Testing
Applied Technical Services (ATS) performs HiPot testing on electronics to ensure the continued efficacy of insulation material when subjected to high voltages. Analyzing electrical characteristics using methods such as HiPot testing verifies the product’s compliance with safety and performance requirements before manufacturers take it to market.
What is HiPot Testing?
High potential (withstand) testing involves subjecting a product to a high voltage for a set duration to determine if the device can handle typical voltages and voltage spikes (transients) with minimal leakage, as success demonstrates product safety and reliability.
Withstand testing performed during the product design phase, can reveal electrical weaknesses and defects in a prototype or material sample. Pursuing this and other types of validation testing helps manufacturers ensure their products meet the demands of their intended application and anticipate the product’s reactions to adverse scenarios. Clients may also incorporate HiPot testing into production line quality assessments or as part of failure analysis.
HiPot Testing with ATS
ATS performs HiPot and other dielectric tests in our state-of-the-art electrical testing lab. We are ISO/IEC 17025:2017 accredited by A2LA in dielectric strength and insulation resistance testing. Our experts regularly test circuits, cables, wire harnesses, circuit boards, and more complex systems for electrical properties, safety, and performance.
We can design a custom withstand testing procedure at select voltages and durations. Alternatively, clients can request an extant testing standard from authorities, such as ASTM, IEC, and MIL-STD. Whether providing custom or standards-based testing, ATS staff thoroughly analyzes your product and summarizes their findings in a documented report.
ATS can perform AC and DC HiPot testing — the former to ensure the product will not break down or pose a safety hazard during normal operating conditions and the latter to subject the product to more rigorous voltages to deliberately provoke failure or breakdown.
