The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies performs Hipot testing in compliance with IEC 60950 testing standards established by the International Electrotechnical Commission.

IEC 60950 Hipot Testing

Hipot testing induces voltage to test the insulation integrity of electrical equipment, including DC cables, motors and motor systems, and several other devices. IEC 60950 testing consists of Hipot testing performed to specific testing parameters such as test voltages based on the type and class of equipment and environmental conditions, testing duration, the ramp-up rate, and acceptable leakage currents. These specifications help to promote consistent, repeatable results.

High Potential Testing

High Potential testing, commonly referred to as Hipot testing, is conducted to analyze and verify the integrity of insulation in devices and equipment. There are a series of factors that can contribute to insulation deterioration, including:

  • Moisture and Humidity
  • Manufacturing Defects
  • Severe Temperatures
  • Chemical Exposure
  • Mechanical Damage
  • Overheating and Overloading
  • Vibration and Mechanical Stress
  • Improper Maintenance and Handling

While Hipot testing is important to ensure the safety and reliability of most types of electrical equipment, it is essential to maintaining ITE, or information technology equipment. As ITE is responsible for the storage and transmission of critical data, poorly insulated devices and equipment can result in catastrophic losses. Manufacturers of ITE products should have their products tested to IEC 60950 testing standards to ensure industry compliance, optimal functionality, dependability, and safety.
