IP 68 Certification

Applied Technical Services provides professional electrical enclosure testing and IP 68 certification services.

What is an IP Rating, and Why is it Important?

The International Electrotechnical Commission,  or IEC,  developed Ingress protection ratings to create a uniform standard of electronic enclosure protection. An Ingress protection rating provides information on a device’s resistance to water, dirt, and dust-induced damage.

Ingress protection is an integral factor in consumer and user safety. IP ratings apply to products, equipment, packaging, and storage, so it’s essential to verify which level of protection is necessary for the desired application. Failure to adequately protect equipment and products from environmental damage can lead to expensive repairs and premature failure.

Ingress Protection Against Solids

The first digit in the IP rating indicates the protection against solids such as sand, dust, and dirt. The levels of protection against solids range from zero to six, with six offering the most protection and zero offering the least. The varying classifications of protection are as follows.

Level 0:

No protection

Level 1:

Offers protection against objects with a diameter greater than 50mm.

Level 2:

Offers protection against objects with a diameter greater than 12.5mm

Level 3:

Offers protection against objects with a diameter greater than 2.5mm.

Level 4:

Offers protection against objects with a diameter greater than 1.0mm.

Level 5:

Offers protection against harmful quantities of dust

Level 6:

Dust-tight seal

Ingress Protection Against Liquids

The last digit indicates the device’s resistance to water or liquid-induced damage. The spectrum of protection ranges from one to eight, with eight offering the most protection. The levels of protection against liquids are as follows.

Level 0:

No protection

Level 1:

Offers protection against drops of water

Level 2:

Offers protection against direct sprays of water at specific angles

Level 3:

Offers increased protection against direct sprays of water at specific angles

Level 4:

Offers protection against splashed water; Limited ingress allowed

Level 5:

Offers protection against jets of water; Limited ingress allowed

Level 6:

Offers protection against high-pressure water jet; Limited ingress allowed

Level 7:

Offers protection against brief periods of immersion in water

Level 8:

Offers protection against extended periods of immersion in water
