Applied Technical Services provides eddy current NDI (nondestructive inspection) services to identify material characteristics and discontinuities without damaging the test subject.

Eddy Current Testing

Eddy current testing is highly versatile and accurate, making it a preferred nondestructive testing method for several different materials, purposes, and industries. Eddy current inspections combine an electric current and magnetism with a subject’s conductive surface (electromagnetic induction), inducing an eddy current that generates a magnetic field. This allows NDI technicians to identify damage, flaws, irregularities, and inconsistencies in a material. Technicians are also able to analyze the conductivity and thickness of coatings on the subject material. Eddy current NDI allows the detection of very small surface and near-surface flaws through several layers without interference. Eddy current testing is highly effective on subjects with complex geometries and can be used on underwater and high-temperature objects. Eddy current NDI is cost effective and provides immediate results.

Common Applications

Due to its portability, cost-effectiveness, and general flexibility, eddy current inspections are used in a variety of applications. Some of these include:

  • Aircraft Inspections
  • Heat Exchanger Tubing Inspections
  • Welded Joint Inspections
  • Turbine Blade Inspections
  • Nuclear Reactor Inspections
  • Bridge Inspections
  • Heat Treatment Verification
  • Coating Conductivity Testing
  • Alloy Identification and Analysis
  • Fusion Defects

Materials Tested

Eddy current NDI requires that a test subject be conductive and is commonly used to test materials such as:

  • Titanium
  • Stainless Steel
  • Aluminum Alloys
  • Copper Alloys

Industries Served

Eddy current testing is commonly used in industries including:

  • Aviation
  • Aerospace
  • Automotive
  • Nuclear
  • Power Generation
  • Petrochemical
  • Pipelines
  • Welding Fabrication
