EDS Elemental Analysis

EDS elemental analysis is one of many non-destructive testing methods Applied Technical Services employs in our metallurgy lab. EDS, also known as energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, energy dispersive x-ray analysis, or energy dispersive x-ray microanalysis, is an analytical method that evaluates the chemical and elemental composition of a sample. ATS is accredited to ISO/IEC 17025 (A2LA) to perform EDS elemental analysis per ASTM E1508.
The EDS Procedure

Energy-dispersive spectroscopy frequently accompanies scanning electron microscopy to give a fully comprehensive understanding of the sample. The primary function of this method is material identification and chemical/elemental analysis. The electron microscope emits a scanning electron beam, exciting the sample’s atoms and creating an electromagnetic emission spectrum. Since each element has a unique atomic structure, the emission spectrum given off is distinctive. Our technicians analyze the emission spectrum to identify the sample. The team at Applied Technical Services regularly employs this method on materials such as contaminant particles, corrosion products, metal platings, and metal chips. We apply this technique to assist our clients with failure analysis, research studies, and product testing, among other applications. EDS is an effective option for quality control due to its capabilities in corrosion and contamination identification. Our experts regularly conduct EDS elemental analysis for:
