XRD elemental analysis is one of many services offered by the metallurgy lab at Applied Technical Services. XRD elemental analysis is also known as x-ray diffraction or surface XRD analysis. ATS experts apply this method to assist clients with a multitude of applications, from failure analysis to reverse engineering. ATS labs are certified to conduct XRD elemental analysis to the ASTM D934 standard.
What is XRD?
XRD elemental analysis is a non-destructive testing method that evaluates and measures the internal structure of crystalline samples. X-ray diffraction also assesses properties such as facet formation, phase transitions, and roughness.
Our metallurgy experts perform this method by irradiating the sample material from different angles. The crystalline structure of the sample will diffract the x-rays in a distinct diffraction pattern. We can compare the diffraction pattern to the ICDD (International Centre for Diffraction Data) database to determine the exact atomic composition of the material, thus identifying it.
XRD elemental analysis gives customers a better understanding of their material’s functionality and properties. XRD assists clients with metallurgic phase verification, contaminant identification, research and development, corrosion analysis, reverse engineering for coatings, and material production. This rapid testing method can analyze metallurgic mounts, certain coatings, and powder samples.
