ATS performs Hardness Testing in our specialized Hardness Testing lab.

Before they can be used, all materials must be thoroughly tested to verify heat treat conditions. One of the most important characteristics that needs to be tested is hardness. It indicates the resistance of the material to indentation, and it is determined by measuring the permanent depth of the indentation when using a fixed force (load) and a given indenter. The smaller the indentation, the harder the material. Within the ATS hardness testing lab, hardness values are obtained by measuring the depth or the area of the indentation using one of several different test methods. They include the microhardness techniques (Vickers and Knoop) along with the following methods:

Common Hardness Testing Standards

Through hardness testing, ATS can determine vital information about a material’s limitations. The hardness testing lab technicians will also be able to provide insights into the material’s practical uses, as well as its potential for certain industrial applications. These tests also help confirm the component’s ability to function as designed. The various hardness testing procedures ATS perform are covered by the following industry standards:

  • ASTM E10
  • ASTM E18
  • ASTM A370
  • ASTM E384
  • ASTM E92
  • ASTM A956
  • ASTM D2583
  • ASTM B647
  • EN 10002
  • EN 1043-1
  • EN 1043-2
  • EN 6507-2
  • ISO 6505-1
  • ISO 9015-2
