Evaluating Concrete at its Core

The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (ATS FoC) performs concrete core testing to evaluate the strength and condition of existing hardened concrete structures. This quality-control process helps determine construction integrity and identify whether older concrete in buildings, bridges, or slabs requires repair.

When is Concrete Core Testing Required?

Concrete core testing is used to address structural concerns such as cracking, damage, deterioration, or suspected poor-quality concrete. Typically, it is required during renovations, retrofits, or structural safety assessments.

This testing determines if concrete can safely support current or increased loads. It also supports code compliance and engineering decisions by providing reliable data for approvals, standards, and dispute resolution.

How We Test Concrete for Strength and Quality

At ATS, our engineers use specialized equipment and adhere to both national and international standards such as ASTM C42 to deliver reliable data on concrete strength and quality, supporting compliance and structural safety.

Our concrete core testing involves a range of methods, such as:

  • Sampling and Extraction
  • End Preparation (trimming, grinding, or capping)
  • Compression Testing
  • Physical Properties Evaluation (mass per unit volume, water absorption, permeable voids, and apparent volume)
  • Flexural Strength and Toughness
  • Grout Testing
  • Load Testing

We also offer a full range of concrete and aggregate testing services for pre-construction, ongoing maintenance, and all project phases.

Quality Testing You Can Trust

Our ISO/IEC 17025:2017-accredited and ISO 9001:2015-registered testing and inspection services are available both on-site and in our laboratories, supporting our commitment to safety and reliability. Since 1967, ATS has been a trusted partner in testing, inspection, certification, and calibration (TICC). After joining SGS in 2026, we have expanded our concrete testing capabilities and now serve clients across industries worldwide.
