The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (ATS FoC) offers freeze-thaw concrete testing. Harsh winter conditions affect concrete performance, durability, and safety. Our ASTM C666-compliant tests assess concrete’s resistance to rapid freezing and thawing, ensuring concrete mixes meet the demands of their intended application.

Why is ASTM C666 Important in Construction?

ASTM C666 is a standardized method for assessing concrete’s resistance to repeated freezing and thawing. It provides construction teams with consistent metrics, such as durability factor and mass loss, to evaluate susceptibility to damage. Since freeze-thaw deterioration often leads to early surface scaling and cracking, C666 results help set acceptance criteria and guide mix adjustments, including air entrainment and aggregate selection.

It includes two test procedures that simulate field conditions and assess durability using metrics such as relative dynamic modulus of elasticity, mass loss, and visible deterioration.

Procedure A: Rapid Freezing and Thawing in Water

Procedure A keeps specimens fully submerged during freeze-thaw cycles, maintaining near-saturated conditions. This method evaluates concrete under severe moisture exposure to identify susceptibility to internal damage and scaling.

Procedure B: Rapid Freezing in Air and Thawing in Water

Procedure B alternates freezing in air with thawing in water, creating wet and dry cycles that better reflect real-world conditions. This method demonstrates how surface and near-surface deterioration develop under changing moisture levels.

About Our Freeze Thaw Concrete Testing Capabilities

Our concrete testing laboratory is accredited to ISO 17025, AASHTO R18, and Army Corps of Engineers standards. We perform ASTM C666 testing in strict accordance with the standard, ensuring reproducible and traceable results. Our experienced technicians use precision freeze-thaw chambers and deliver visual inspections and detailed reports on mass change and dynamic modulus trends. Our staff includes current and former members of ACI, ASCE, ASTM, ICRI, FRCA, and SWRI, as well as those who hold leadership positions at the local and national levels. Our team has extensive experience with an array of concrete testing standards.

Why Freeze Thaw Concrete Testing Matters

Freeze-thaw cycles can cause microcracking, surface scaling, and reduced structural capacity. Freeze-thaw concrete testing helps do the following:

  • Support quality control for mix designs and production.
  • Avoid costly repairs by identifying problematic mixes early.
  • Extend service life through informed material and design choices.
  • Maintain safety by preventing unexpected deterioration.
