The Need for Flammability Testing Labs
There is a world of safety standards to which manufacturers must adhere to. Many of those standards deal specifically with flammability, or the potential an object has to ignite or burn. To comply with safety standards, manufacturers must submit their products for flammability testing. These examiners, usually certified flammability testing labs, will determine whether the products meet criteria set forth by standards.
Flammability can be quantified through various types of testing; different tests can establish different qualities of the test materials such as the temperature at which it catches on fire and how long it burns. Test materials are assigned ratings based on these qualities, and may be approved for use or rejected as unsafe according to relevant standards.
ATS performs the following test methods to the relevant standards:
- Flammability of Interior Materials
- Specifies requirements for flame resistance in car interior materials
- FMVSS 302 (ISO 17025 (A2LA) Accredited)
- 49 CFR 571.302 [US Standard]
- ASTM D5132
- GB8410 [Chinese Standard]
- TL1010 [Volkswagen Standard]
- DBL 5307 [Mercedes Standard]
- GS 97038 [BMW Standard]
- HES D6003 [Honda Standard]
- GMW 3232 [General Motors Standard]
- SAE J369
- ISO 3795
- DIN EN ISO 75200 (ISO 17025 (A2LA) Accredited)
Consumer Products
- Flammability of Clothing Textiles (ISO 17025 (A2LA) Accredited)
- Assigns classes of flammability to clothing
- CFR 1610
- Flammability for Soft Toys (ISO 17025 (A2LA) Accredited)
- Quantifies flammability of soft children’s toys
- ASTM F963–A5
- Flammability for Fabrics
- Quantifies flammability of fabrics
- ASTM F963–A6
Plastics
- Determines burning qualities of plastics
- UL94 (ISO 17025 (A2LA) Accredited)
- ASTM D4804 [Non-rigid Plastics]
- ASTM D635 [Horizontal Burn]
- ASTM D3801 [Solid Plastics, Vertical Burn]
