The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies’ (FoC’s) DMA testing services measure the mechanical properties of non-metallic materials.

What is Dynamic Mechanical Analysis?

Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) is a mechanical and thermal analysis technique that measures a material’s viscoelastic properties as a function of atmosphere, temperature, stress, frequency, and time. During DMA testing procedures, technicians clamp a sample into a DMA instrument and apply an oscillating force while the sample’s temperature is altered in a controlled way. Technicians measure the correlation between the force applied and the deformation present. The analysis process provides information on the following:

  • Storage modulus (Stiffness)
  • Loss modulus (Damping)
  • Tan δ (Damping factor)
  • Tg (Glass transition)

DMA is an excellent way to examine how materials respond to real-world thermal cycling, vibration, and dynamic loads.

About Our DMA Lab

Our chemistry lab uses DMA to provide clients with an accurate and detailed characterization of a material’s viscoelastic behavior under controlled temperature, frequency, and stress conditions. Our team uses its collective experience and access to state-of-the-art instrumentation to evaluate a material’s mechanical and physical properties. The information acquired from our comprehensive testing can be an excellent resource for our clients, as it allows them to do the following:

  • Determine a material’s durability and suitability for specific applications or environments.
  • Conduct failure analysis.
  • Strengthen product development and quality control processes.

Our chemistry experts provide reliable and data-driven DMA reports that present our findings clearly and concisely. Our DMA services are adept at analyzing polymers, elastomers, composites, and adhesives in accordance with a wide array of industry standards, including, but not limited to:

  • ASTM D5023
  • ASTM D5026
  • ASTM E1640

Why is It Important to Study a Material’s Viscoelastic Behavior?

DMA provides in-depth information on the viscoelastic behavior of materials, helping engineers understand how deformation and fatigue will influence the long-term viability of a material. Understanding a material’s viscoelasticity will lead to better material selection, improved product design, and better product performance.
