The Applied Technical Services Family of Companies (FoC) offers comprehensive surface finish inspection services. Surface finishes quietly shape the performance, safety, and reliability of countless products we rely on every day, from automotive parts and aerospace components to medical devices and consumer electronics. Even subtle variations in texture can influence an item’s functionality. Our dimensional inspection lab helps our clients ensure every part has the desired finish, ensuring its performance and safety.
What is Surface Finish?
Surface finish refers to the characteristics of a manufactured material’s surface. Surface finish consists of the following three factors:
Roughness
Surface roughness is determined by measuring the fine irregularities that appear on a material’s surface during the manufacturing process. These microscopic inconsistencies create deviations in a surface’s smoothness, and the more abundant the inconsistencies, the rougher the surface.
Waviness
Surface waviness refers to the larger deviations and irregularities present on a material’s surface. These irregularities have longer wavelengths than roughness, but shorter wavelengths than form.
Lay
Lay is the direction of a manufactured material’s dominant surface pattern.
Together, these topographical characteristics determine a component’s surface appearance and influence how manufactured components perform and interact with other parts. Surface finish can have a significant impact on the following:
- The friction created between two parts or components
- The effectiveness and integrity of a seal
- A component’s lifecycle and resistance to fatigue
- The appearance or aesthetic of a product
