Applied Technical Services is a trusted surface roughness measurement lab capable of identifying irregularities present on a material’s surface.

What is Surface Roughness?

Surface roughness refers to the smoothness of a material’s surface. In industrial applications, the smoothness of a material’s surface will greatly impact how said material interacts with its environment. Although they’re microscopic, the peaks, valleys, and texture patterns present on a material’s surface determine its smoothness or lack thereof. In applications that require precise manufacturing processes, slight deviations in surface texture can pose significant risks, potentially compromising the product or component’s functionality, integrity, and longevity. Surface roughness measurements are a necessity for manufacturers in demanding industries, such as aerospace, automotive, and medical device.

About Our Surface Measurement Lab

Our laboratory provides comprehensive surface roughness measurement services using both contact and non‑contact technologies, accommodating the unique needs of our clients. We utilize the Mitutoyo SJ‑301 for our contact measurements. The portable profilometer captures Ra, Rz, Rt, and additional parameters with repeatability. It’s highly versatile, capable of evaluating a range of materials, including metals, polymers, coatings, and machined surfaces. As an alternative to contact-based methods, our optical surface roughness measurement services are the ideal solution for materials with sensitive surfaces. Contact and non-contact methods have their advantages and disadvantages as described below:

 Contact Surface Roughness  Measurement

Advantages:

  • Produces a clear wave profile
  • Improved reliability over non-contact methods
  • Effective on a wide range of materials
  • Capable of long-distance measurements

Disadvantages:

  • Stylus wear
  • Stylus creating surface scratches
  • Time consuming

Optical Surface Roughness Measurement

Advantages:

  • Offers 3D analysis
  • Provides rapid measurements
  • Ideal for polished and coated metals, glass, and ceramics

Disadvantages:

  • Incapable of measuring low reflective materials
  • Limited depth of focus
  • Accuracy issues when evaluating rough surfaces

The Importance of Surface Roughness Measurement Labs

Surface roughness measurements are an invaluable part of the quality control process in manufacturing processes. Identifying and resolving texture-related issues in a material’s surface can help businesses do the following:

  • Ensure that a product or component’s surface roughness is within the desired tolerability
  • Maintain adequate quality control
  • Identify and address irregularities
